The Mirror of Dharma

Mahāsi Sayādaw developed a way of insight meditation designed to lead the practitioner from here to awakening. Mahāsi Sayādaw was an orthodox Theravāda monk and his understanding of awakening is taken directly from the Theravāda tradition as elaborated over centuries into a system of vipassanā ñāṇas, or “insight understandings.” In 1960 he gave a long talk to practitioners who had attained stream entry, the first stage of awakening as understood by the Theravāda, with the overarching theme of the “mirror of dhamma” – how practitioners can assess their understanding for themselves. Patrick will explore this system over four Wednesday nights, with a particular focus on how it might apply to us in contemporary Australia.
